Movies Release on Chinese New Year 2019

 

It’s that time of the year again where highly anticipated films are being pushed out for the biggest holiday in China, Chinese New Year! We see films from highly anticipated directors like Stephen Chow, Han Han, Alan Mak, and Ning Hao this year.

It has been a tradition to watch movies on this long holiday and usually Chinese New Year films top the box office bringing billion of yuans.

Last year, the box office raked in more than 5 billion yuan and the number is expected to climb up this year. This year, we have over 10 films that premiere on the first day of Chinese New Year (Feb 5th). Let’s see which one will come out on top.

[Feature] Supporting Female Leads Who Deserve Some Recognition

Most of the time we focus so much on the female lead, her character growth throughout the series, and her romance with the male lead, that we often forget that there are also supporting female leads that deserve some attention as well. Whether she’s the one who is fighting with the FL for the ML, having an unrequited love towards ML or someone else, or has her own agenda in the drama, you can’t deny that sometimes she just outshines the FL in one way or another. Personally, there have been many times where I truly rooted for the second female lead more than the FL because I saw more potential from her and I liked her character more. Unfortunately, not all supporting female leads get their deserved happy ending. But, regardless, here’s a list of supporting female leads that I personally rooted for and really liked because of their badass attitude, selfless love, and unwavering convictions.

Synopsis: Set in the Northern Song dynasty, the story revolves around Sheng Minglan, the unfavoured sixth daughter of an official. After being mistreated by her legal mother and bullied by her half-sisters, Minglan learns to hide her skills and true intentions and, ultimately succeeds in avenging her biological mother’s death. She meets Gu Tingye, who initially dislikes her but after witnessing her wits and intelligence, decides to help her. They eventually fall in love with each other. After Gu Tingye becomes a powerful official, he successfully makes Minglan his wife. As his wife, Minglan helps guard against his unpleasant relatives and purges the court of corrupt ministers. The couple eventually earned their happily-ever-after, and Minglan rose to prominence as an influential figure of the Sheng family.

CBN Weekly’s Most Commercially Valuable Celebrities of 2018

CBN Weekly released their list of Most Commercially Valuable Celebrities in 2018 a few weeks ago, so this post is a bit late. My apologies! Topping the list of 2018 is Yang Mi, who was #3 in 2017’s list. Being one of China’s most popular actresses, Yang Mi has definitely established herself as an important figure in the Chinese entertainment industry. It makes sense for her to be at the top.
