[Review] Eternal Wave (2017 Film)

Title: Eternal Wave (新永不消逝的电波)

Release date: November 3rd, 2017

Starring: Aaron Kwok, Zhao Liying, Zhang Han

Synopsis: The story takes in In 1937, after the fall of Shanghai during the Japanese invasion. Spy Lin Xiang (Aaron Kwok) was ordered to infiltrate Shanghai and reconstruct the underground headquarter that was destroyed. Here he was assigned a simple but with a very strong sense of justice girl, Lan Fang (Zhao Liying), to play his wife. Known as the “underground party couples”, the two fight hand in hand to gather information and fight against the Japanese invaders, notably the Japanese official (Zhang Lanxin).

In my opinion the story line is not that interesting, your typical communist spy scenes with infiltrations, role playing, and deciphering telegraphs, but the acting definitely is solid. Aaron Kwok, as a veteran actor, fits the mature veteran spy image very well. This is Zhao Liying second time as a communist spy (first in Rookie Rouge Agent) and I enjoyed her character here more than in Rookie Rouge. Instead of the genius spy Yan Zhi, Lan Fang is more the clumsy but hardworking learn as you go kind of spy. I thought it would be weird seeing Aaron Kwok and Zhao Liying as a couple but they actually pulled it off pretty convincingly, despite the age difference. Other actors including Zhang Han, Simon Yam, and Zhang Lanxin were also really good in the movie too, especially Zhang Lanxin as the Japanese official! Beside the acting, there are a lot of actions in this film. The fighting reminds me of a Jackie Chan movie + with a lot of more fire power. It’s a pretty fun watch in my opinion.

  2. Just saw this and yeah the storyline felt like it had been done before. My favorite part was the couple scenes between Aaron and ZLY, I wish they had more. They were really sweet. Towards the end it got a little bit too crazy/unrealistic for me.

  3. Agreed that the storyline wasn’t all that interesting and imo ZYL’s role wasn’t even necessary but i’ll watch ANYTHING with her in it 😁..
