Episode 3

Wei Wu Xian, Jiang Cheng, Jiang Yan Li, and the other disciples of the Yunmeng Jiang Sect have arrived at Cai Yi Town to attend a lecture from the Gusu Lan Sect. After traveling a long distance from their home, Wei Wu Xian and Jiang Cheng request to stay at an inn to rest at and the three find an inn that is close by.

However, after reserving a few rooms, they are suddenly told that they have to leave the inn as another, more influential guest, is arriving and has booked the entire inn. It turns out that the one who reserved the room in Lanling Jin Sect’s Jin Zi Xuan, who is also Jiang Yan Li’s fiancé.

After talking with Mian Mian, Jin Zi Xuan’s personal attendant, she allows them to stay. But the appearance of Jin Zi Xuan afterwards forces them to once again leave the inn.

The next day, as the Yunmeng Jiang Sect’s students try to enter the Gusu Lan Sect, they are refused entry because they do not have the invitation sent to them. Wei Wu Xian confesses that he forgot the invitation at the inn they were staying at and begs for them to be allowed inside. However, the guards refuse to let them enter.

As they continue to bicker, Lan Wang Ji appears. He has just come back from a mission and is rushing inside to bring an injured disciple inside. Wei Wu Xian realizes that Lan Wang Ji must be an important in the Gusu Lan Sect and tries to convince him to let him and his people inside. But Lan Wang Ji quickly brushes him off and tells them that without the invitation they will not be allowed to enter. This effectively makes the Yunmeng Jiang Sect members forced to camp outside the Gusu Lan Sect because they have no where else to go.

Wei Wu Xian leaves the group to return to Cai Yi Town to retrieve the invitation. Along the way, he grabs himself a famous wine called the Emperor’s Smile. As he returns to the campsite, he finds that everyone is gone and he then tries to sneak into the Gusu Lan Sect.

But Wei Wu Xian is caught by Lan Wang Ji who tells him that he must be punished for breaking the rules of Gusu Lan Sect (sneaking in to the Gusu Lan Sect after hours, breaking the seal at the main entrance, and bringing in alcohol). Wei Wu Xian tries to shake him off and the two get into a small fight with both rivaling each other. But the fight stops when Lan Wang Ji breaks one of Wei Wu Xian’s wine bottles.

At the same time, Lan Xi Chen and Lan Qi Ren are conducting an investigation regarding the body of the disciple that Lan Wang Ji brought back earlier. They are disrupted when Lan Wang Ji brings Wei Wu Xian in to request punishment for him. Wei Wu Xian tries to persuade the two to let him off as he is not a Gusu Lan Sect members and shouldn’t need to abide by the strict rules. Lan Xi Chen tries to reason with Wei Wu Xian and tells him that he is no longer in the Yunmeng Jiang Sect and he must follow the rules of the Gusu Lan Sect. He allows Lan Wang Ji to punish Wei Wu Xian, but he reminds his younger brother to be lenient towards Wei Wu Xian as it is his first time coming to the Gusu Lan Sect. Lan Wang Ji decides that the punishment for Wei Wu Xian will be to copy the Gusu Lan Sect’s rules 300 times, to which Wei Wu Xian is against.

As Wei Wu Xian tries to talk himself out of the punishment and tells Lan Xi Chen and Lan Qi Ren that he left the premises to go find the invitation in order for him and his sect members to enter the Gusu Lan Sect. Lan Xi Chen interjects and tells Wei Wu Xian that the Yunmeng Jiang Sect members were already let in earlier due to Lan Wang Ji. Wei Wu Xian is surprised by Lan Xi Chen’s answers and realizes that Lan Wang Ji did actually help them and becomes thankful towards him.

As the four finish up talking, Wei Wu Xian and Lan Wang Ji stay behind to help Lan Xi Chen and Lan Qi Ren with the mysterious disciple’s body. Both Lan Xi Chen and Lan Qi Ren are confused as to what happened. Wei Wu Xian shares his insight and knowledge, which gets the other three to start piecing things together.

In the Qishan Wen Sect, Wen Ruo Han secretly orders Wen Qing to find the Stygian Tiger Amulet when their men go to the Gusu Lan Sect to attend the lecture. Wen Qing obliges and requests to bring along her younger brother, Wen Ning. Wen Ruo Han agrees and also sends Wen Chao with them.

Back at the Gusu Lan Sect, Lan Xi Chen and Lan Wang Ji are having a deep discussion to which Lan Xi Chen laments that he may have been too strict with raising his younger brother. Lan Wang Ji tells his brother that they both grew up under hardships and that he wishes he can help his brother share the burden more. Lan Xi Chen appreciates his brother’s kindness and advises him that the upcoming lecture will be full of young cultivators from various sects and he hopes that Lan Wang Ji will make friends with a few of them. And when he comments on Wei Wu Xian and asks if Lan Wang Ji and his fighting skills are on par, Lan Wang Ji walks away unhappily.

Episode 4

The next day, the lecture begins. All the guests from the various clans are present and the first thing they are lectured on is the Gusu Lan Sect’s strict rules.

During the lecture, Wei Wu Xian gets restless and starts a conversation with Nie Huai Sang. While the two are happily whispering back and forth to each other, Lan Wang Ji begins to get annoyed by their mischievous behavior and gives them a death glare, to which Wei Wu Xian happily waves back at him.

As the lecture continues, different sect members introduce themselves to Lan Qi Ren and gives them their gifts from their respective sects. During Jiang Cheng’s introduction, he is disrupted by the arrival of the Qishan Wen Sect members. Leading the group is Wen Chao, with Wen Qing and Wen Ning behind him.

Wen Chao and Wei Wu Xian get into a dispute when Wei Wu Xian confronts him about disrupting Jiang Cheng during his introduction. Wen Chao fires back at him for being the disrespectful one, which angers both Wei Wu Xian and Jiang Cheng. The argument continues and both members from the Yunmeng Jiang Sect and Qishan Wen Sect point their swords at each other. However, Lan Xi Chen plays his flute and all the unsheathed swords and thrown from their owner’s hands into the air and eventually falls down onto the floor.

Afterwards, Wen Qing steps up to apologize and expresses that she and Wen Ning both will attend the lecture. She also presents the Gusu Lan Sect a gift from the Qishan Wen Sect.

After the lecture, Lan Xi Chen and Lan Qi Ren discuss the motives of the Qishan Wen Clan’s sudden appearance, as they’ve never attended before. Lan Qi Ren advises that they treat them respectfully as they are still their guests, even they weren’t invited. As they continue their conversation, Lan Xi Chen confesses that he feels that the Qishan Wen Clan may have something to do with the corpse that they were investigating last night. Lan Qi Ren also expresses his worries since he has noticed that the Qishan Wen Clan has been becoming stronger and is afraid that something bad might happen that both he and Lan Xi Chen may not be able to handle alone.

In the back of the Gusu Lan mountains, Wen Qing stars her investigation to look for the Stygian Tiger Amulet. At the same time, Wei Wu Xian and Nie Huang San are both enjoying playing at the river and catching fish. Wei Wu Xian notices that something is up and he quickly leaves. He then catches Wen Qing lurking around and becomes suspicious as to why she is there since not many people can come to the area. Wen Qing dodges his questions and brushes him off as she quickly leaves.

That night Jiang Cheng vents to Jiang Yan Li about Wei Wu Xian and how he always makes the Yunmeng Jiang Sect look bad. Jiang Yan Li tells him that Wei Wu Xian’s unrestraint personality is exactly the same as the previous leaders and members of the Yunmeng Jiang Sect. Jiang Cheng then asks if that is why their father favors Wei Wu Xian more, to which Jiang Yan Li says that their father has always liked any student who has good character and morals. She then tells him that despite getting annoyed by Wei Wu Xian and always nagging him, he truly cares about him. Before Jiang Cheng can counter her, Wei Wu Xian appears with the fishes he caught earlier with Nie Huai Sang to share with the Jiang siblings.

During the lecture the next day, Wei Wu Xian gets himself in trouble again. This time he is caught by Lan Qi Ren who quizzes him on a few things, to which Wei Wu Xian answers all them correctly. However, he stumbles on the last question by Lan Qi Ren who then turns to Lan Wang Ji to educate Wei Wu Xian. Lan Wang Ji gives three different answers which satisfies Lan Qi Ren. But Wei Wu Xian interjects and explains that he knew the three answers but was actually thinking about a fourth answer. After hearing Wei Wu Xian’s answer, Lan Qi Ren is furious because Wei Wu Xian’s answer contains using unorthodox methods that is forbidden. He kicks Wei Wu Xian out of the lecture hall and punishes him to copy scriptures a thousand times and orders Lan Wang Ji to supervise him.

As Wei Wu Xian leaves the lecture, he bumps into Wen Ning, who is practicing archery at a nearby waterfall. He is impressed by Wen Ning’s archery and praises his skills. Wen Ning is shy and tries to leave, but Wei Wu Xian stops him and gives him a few pointers about archery.

As Wei Wu Xian is teaching Wen Ning, Wen Qing suddenly appears. Her appearance makes Wen Ning lose focus and he accidentally shoots his arrow towards her, but Wei Wu Xian is able to stop the arrow. Wen Qing then questions Wen Ning is together with Wei Wu Xian, to which Wen Ning tells his sister how good of a person Wei Wu Xian is. Wei Wu Xian then asks Wen Qing why he always sees her lurking around the back mountains of Gusu Lan. Wen Qing ignores his questions and then quickly leaves with her brother.

After the two leave, Lan Wang Ji finally catches up to Wei Wu Xian to get him to receive his punishment.

  1. After a huge fan uproar over the leaked script and scene images, petition to Tencent Entertainment top execs, and how well anime, audio drama and merchandising (especially WangXian items) have done, drama production team might have decided not to mess too much with the OTP.

However, the original synopsis submitted for the filming permit did say WWX and LWJ would go separate ways at the end. WWX would follow his heart and live a carefree life while LWJ would stay and tend to big important stuff (The term is often used for those running a nation.)

Only time will tell, assuming the drama can finish airing.

  2. It is kind a disappointing how they alternated Wen Qing’s character. In animation and novel she has very strong personality and independent yet they made her be a puppet for Wen clan.

    1. Oh really? That’s so disappointing then. I would’ve liked her character more if she was more like that. I liked Meng Zi Yi as Ye Hong Yu in Ever Night, but so far she’s not impressing me at all. I know the drama is supposed to be male centered, but I do wish the female characters were more developed too. For example, Nirvana in Fire did a good job with its portrayal of female characters, even though the drama was dominated by men.

      1. Quantity doesn’t equal to quality. She was given many more scenes than in the novel. It’s still not known whether she will ride off into the sunset with WWX at the end, as a leaked script showed.

          1. The leaked script suggested her set up was a Mary Sue – almost every guy liked her, including those who never met her in the novel. JC was a top suitor, like in many fanfics. Then… Fan revolt and warning from the author’s representative. These happened less than halfway into filming. So the producers likely had enough time to revise the script.
