Well… It’s finally here! After facing numerous rumors for a long time, hot couple Yang Mi and Hawick Lau have officially announced their divorce through their company, Jaywalk Studio.
After starring in 2012’s Ru Yi together as the main characters, Yang Mi and Hawick Lau admitted to dating. Because of the rising status of Yang Mi, the two immediately became one of the China’s hottest couples, which also boosted Hawick’s status in the entertainment industry.
Yang Mi and Hawick Lau officially got married on January 8th, 2014 in Bali, Indonesia. The wedding was small and private and only included close family and friends. A few months after (in June), Yang Mi gave birth to their daughter, nicknamed “Little Sticky Rice”.
Life after marriage, however, wasn’t as easy it seemed. Because of their high statuses in the entertainment industry, both Yang Mi and Hawick Lau were always busy. The two were always going back and forth between Mainland China and Hong Kong for filming and to take care of their daughter. However, because of their busy schedules, “Little Sticky Rice” was mainly taken care of Hawick’s parents in Hong Kong.
Without even making making the one-year mark of marriage, divorce rumors were already beginning to spread. Many people began to speculate about the two because they were rarely seen together. However, both Yang Mi and Hawick Lau repeatedly denied the rumors. But they both still kept to their busy schedules.
There was an instance, after the success of Swords of Legends, that Yang Mi got entangled with Li Yi Feng, her leading man from the drama. There were speculations that she had been cheating on Hawick Lau with Li Yi Feng. But it was a baseless rumor with no proof and was easily put to rest after Yang Mi and Li Yi Feng denied it.
In 2016, Hawick Lau was speculated to have cheated on Yang Mi with his twice co-star Angel Wang Ou. Although pictures and some videos were posted, Hawick Lau and Angel Wang denied the rumors. Yang Mi also voiced her opinion in support for Hawick.
Fast forward to 2018… After being married for 5 years, Yang Mi and Hawick Lau finally calls it quits. According to their statement, they divorced earlier this year and, unlike most divorces in the media recently, it was a mutual decision between the two parties. After their separation, they will both take care of raising their daughter, who is currently still being taken care of by Hawick’s parents.
In my opinion, marriage life for Yang Mi and Hawick Lau wasn’t easy. One, because it was obvious that they only got married due to Yang Mi getting pregnant. And, two, because they weren’t ready to be married. They were at the height of their careers and it would not have been a smart move for either of them to stop then. That’s why, even after marriage, they continued to work and take on job after job, at the cost of taking care of their child and their marriage. But, regardless, I support the two of them in their decision and I hope that they continue to work hard for themselves and their child.
